Reverse Vending Machine: Sustainable Plastic Waste Management Solution

Plastic bottle waste is still a big challenge for the environment, both in Indonesia and globally. Tens of thousands of tons of single-use plastic bottle waste are generated every day, but most of it cannot be managed properly and ends up piling up in final disposal sites (TPA). The low level of sorting and recycling of plastic bottles exacerbates this condition, resulting in direct impact on ecosystem damage and decreasing environmental quality.

Seeing this problem, PT Inamas Sintesis Teknologi (INASTEK) presents a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) as a technological solution to support more effective and sustainable management of plastic bottle waste. RVM is designed to make it easier for people to sort and collect plastic bottles in a simple and measurable way, while encouraging active involvement in environmental conservation efforts.

Through the RVM machine, people can put plastic bottles into the machine and get rewards in the form of points as a form of appreciation. This system helps build new habits, where waste is no longer seen as mere waste, but as a resource that has value if managed properly. This approach is in line with circular economy principles which emphasize reusing and reducing waste from the source.

INASTEK also integrates RVM machines with digital systems to support a more transparent and measurable management process. This machine is able to collect data, including information on the brands of plastic bottles collected, which can be used as a basis for decision making for the government, industry players and other stakeholders in supporting more responsible environmental policies.

To ensure the sustainability of the recycling process, INASTEK processes the collected plastic bottle waste through a series of advanced processes. Plastic bottles, especially the HDPE type, will be shredded and reprinted into new products that are useful and have sales value. With this approach, waste management does not stop at the collection stage, but continues to produce valuable products.

This initiative is part of a real solution in encouraging sustainable management of plastic bottle waste. By combining technology, community participation, and recycling processes, INASTEK is committed to creating a cleaner environment, supporting a circular economy, and building a better future for future generations.
